How to Prevent Diamond Core Bit Burning in Hard Granite

Segment burning (overheating and diamond glazing) is the #1 failure in hard stone drilling. Follow these technical guidelines from our engineers to maximize your tool life:

Ensure Continuous Water Flow (Wet Drilling): Never cut water supply short. Water cools the metal matrix and flushes out highly abrasive granite slurry. Slurry buildup causes friction, leading to immediate segment overheating and loss.

Match RPM with Bit Diameter: Running too fast generates extreme heat, causing the diamond to carbonize. For hard granite, reduce your RPM: For OD 50mm: Recommended 900 - 1200 RPM. For OD 100mm: Recommended 450 - 600 RPM

Avoid Excessive Downward Pressure: Let the diamond segments do the work. Applying too much force compresses the bond, preventing worn diamonds from shedding. This causes the bit to "glaze" (feel smooth and stop cutting).

How to Recover a Glazed Bit (Dressing): If your bit stops cutting and looks polished, run the drill bit through a highly abrasive material (such as an dressing stone, firebrick, or soft sandstone) at a low speed to strip the glazed metal and expose new, sharp diamond grits.
