In practical selection, a simple rule applies: use button bits for hard, massive and abrasive formations where productivity, bit life and hole quality are critical; use chisel bits for soft, fractured or unconsolidated formations where low cost and fast shearing action are more important. In layered or variable ground, many drillers start with a chisel bit in the upper soft section and switch to a button bit once harder rock is reached to achieve the best overall drilling efficiency.
